General Adolph Galland, having formed a special Me 262 unit, JV 44, filled with veteran pilots, set out on his last mission of the war in a rocket-armed Me 262. He destroyed two B-26 Marauders in a swift attack, despite being unable to launch his rockets in time, before a P-51 pilot put an end to his career. He was shot up and wounded severely, but managed an emergency landing at a friendly airfield. He would still be grounded by his wounds when Allied forces captured him two weeks later.
